In return, well help you build a career that you can feel passionate about. Job Summary We are seeking a Veterinary Technician 2 for our Insourcing Solutions site in Poolesville, MD . The responsibilties related to the Veterinary Technician 2 are: Communicate with animal care staff, co-workers, veterinary staff, supervisors, PI, and collaborators. Prepare and distribute individualized animal diets, enrichment, and clinical treatments to study animals according to protocols. Collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.). Perform technical procedures including: femoral blood collection, IV catheterization, aseptic tissue collection and processing, euthanasia, anesthesia, food or liquid consumption, drug administration (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV and ID), TB testing, weighing, physical examinations, restraint and handling of animals, radiographs, and other technical procedures as needed. Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies. Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and procedure. Understand basic animal behavior that can be used for training techniques; including positive reinforcement training and cognitive testing Assist in the collection of on-going behavioral testing and data collection Assist veterinarian or investigators with surgeries or specialized procedures. Perform animal health surveillance checks and report any abnormal conditions of either the animals or the animal room environment. Accurately maintain electronic medical records and update treatment plans. Collect, preserve, and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples. Participate in study related necropsies and tissue harvest. Perform weekly mid-day health checks and daily pm health checks of all animals in the LARC 8 colony (including geriatric rhesus monkeys). Responsible for daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning and sanitization of LARC 8 prep areas, and procedure rooms Compose daily emails communicating animal clinical and experimental information to Core and veterinary staff Set-up procedure area and prepare supplies and equipment for experimental procedures Ability to maintain freezer organization tasks and maintain sample inventory. Effectively communicate any animal issues to veterinary staff and investigative staff. Safely handle and dispose of hazardous waste. (e.g. Package for autoclaving or incineration, arrange special pick-up for chemical/radiological waste, document use/disposal as directed). Ability to take on new tasks and perform daily routines with minimal supervision. The qualifications for the Veterinary Technician 2 are: Education High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. BS degree in Animal Science, Biology, or similar, discipline or AA in Veterinary Technology preferred. Experience: 5 years experience working with animals in biomedical research, of which some must be with NHPs. Certification/Licensure: Eligible to take LATG. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
